Boom, bust and echoes

If you’re fascinated by modern ruins like I am, then you’ll want to pick up this month’s Canadian Geographic magazine for a piece on the community of Uranium City, Saskatchewan.
In 1982, the mine at Uranium City closed down and the community of 8000+ saw its population rapidly decline. Today, the town is a shell of its former self.
Photojournalist Daniel Hayduk prepared the piece for the magazine and has additional coverage on his website. It is a great read with stunning images. There is also a companion video Daniel prepared, which is over on Youtube.

Tuesday’s Digital Finds

To start off with, my buddy Tim Stone at C95 was blasting this in his office the other day while working on music logs.
The group is Justice. The album is called Cross. Yes… it’s 4 years old. Far be it for me to pretend like I’m discovering it… but it sounded awesome. The whole album is solid and I am now officially a fan.
Also on the interwebs, a TV show I used to watch when I was much younger (oh… in my early 20s) has now found a new life online. MTV’s Undressed was kitschy to some, sleazy to others, and just plain fun for folks like me. The story lines are hilarious… the acting is so-so… and the show is solid. One episode per week is now being posted at UndressedTV.com.
Finally, as you might have gathered by now I’m a huge fan of Twitter. Well, now you can track my stats (and those of others) — seeing just how often we tweet, and what we’re tweeting about. Check it…

What the hell happened to Google this morning?

According to the Washington Post…
A glitch in a computer security program embedded deeply into Google’s search engine briefly prevented users of the popular search engine from visiting any Web sites turned up in search results this morning. Instead, Google users were redirected to page that warned: “This site may harm your computer.”
People always keep pondering what the world would be like without Google. This morning, we got a brief taste… and it was scary as hell.

Diggnation #1

On Monday, episode 3 of The Frozen Show hits. Brian and I finished editing last night… and it’s far and away the best episode yet. Be sure to check it!
In the meantime… I thought I’d share this with you. All the way back to July 1, 2005 — the very first episode of Diggnation. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht look SOOOO much different here! What is really impressive, though, is how the premise and format of the show has remained reasonably unaltered over the show’s four year run so far.

Notes from all over…
Nov 12th
The new album from The Killers – “Day and Age” – drops November 24th. The two cuts I’ve heard from it so far — Human and Spaceman — are fantastic. Spaceman especially. For some reason, The Killers manage to create a sound that sends my head back to when I was little — you know, wearing pajamas, eating cereal, and watching Saturday morning cartoons cross-legged in the living room. Simpler times…
I’ve been watching much more TV in the last few days of holidays than I have in a long time. In the process, I’m playing catch-up on some things. Like — for example — this (which is awesome.)
With Christmas not far away now, TV is starting fill up with commericals for the season. And, in an effort to stand out from the crowd, advertisers are really working overtime to find obscure Christmas-like songs to provide the soundtrack for the season of shopping. My favourite use of music right now is on the Sears commercials — where the song of choice is Badly Drawn Boy’s Donna and Blitzen. Very very cool.
Finally, Engadget/TUAW is reporting this morning that iPhone 2.2 firmware will start being available for download on November 21st. The two big additions for me will be the addition of Street View to Google Maps (damn Google vans… drive through Canada once in a while!), and the ability to turn off auto-correct (a good thing when you’re trying to talk in a corporate language and not in normal people words.)
On that note… I’m off to play some Blockles. You should too.
